THE EFFECT OF COOLING RATE AND AUSTENITE GRAIN SIZE ON THE AUSTENITE TO FERRITE TRANSFORMATION TEMPERATURE AND DIFFERENT FERRITE MORPHOLOGIES IN MICROALLOYED STEELS
author
Abstract:
Abstract: transformation temperature and different ferrite morphologies in one Nb-microalloyed (HSLA) steel has beeninvestigated. Three different austenite grain sizes were selected and cooled at two different cooling rates for obtainingaustenite to ferrite transformation temperature. Moreover, samples with specific austenite grain size have beenquenched, partially, for investigation on the microstructural evolution. In order to assess the influence of austenite grain size on the ferrite transformation temperature, a temperaturedifferences method (TDM) is established and found to be a good way for detection of austenite to ferrite, pearlite andsometimes other ferrite morphologies transformation temperatures. The results obtained in this way show that increasing of austenite grain size and cooling rate has a significant influenceon decreasing of the ferrite transformation temperature.Micrographs of different ferrite morphologies show that at high temperatures, where diffusion rates are higher, grainboundary ferrite nucleates. As the temperature is lowered and the driving force for ferrite formation increases, intragranular sites inside the austenite grains become operative as nucleation sites and suppress the grain boundaryferrite growth. The results indicate that increasing the austenite grain size increases the rate and volume fraction ofintragranular ferrite in two different cooling rates. Moreover, by increasing of cooling rate, the austenite to ferritetransformation temperature decreases and volume fraction of intragranular ferrite increases. The effect of different austenite grain size and different cooling rates on the austenite to ferrite

full textTHE EFFECT OF STRAINING BEFORE AND DURING AUSTENITE TO FERRITE TRANSFORMATION ON THE FINAL CHARACTERISTICS OF SI-MN TRIP STEELS
TRIP (TRansformation- lnduced- Plasticity) behavior is a powerful mechanism to improve mechanical properties. The basis of TRIP phenomena is the transformation of retained austenite with optimum characteristics (volume fraction, stability, size and morphology) to martensite during deformation at room temperature. Accordingly, the first requirement to obtain desired TRIP effects is to produce an...
full textThe Effect of Ferrite Grain Size on the Fatigue Behavior of Ferrite-martensite Dual-phase Steels
The effect of ferrite grain size on the fatigue and tensile properties of dual phase steels with a 0.25 volume fraction of martensite (Vm) under different heat treatments was investigated. The heat treatments were homogenized at 1200 oC along with several subsequent normalizations at 910 oC, resulting in different microstructures and mechanical properties. After heat treatment, the obtained ste...
full textSTRAIN INDUCED AUSTENITE-TO-FERRITE TRANSFORMATION BEHAVIOR OF PLAIN CARBON STEELS THROUGH SINGLE PASS ROLLING
In principal, a proper combination of strength and ductility is achieved through micro component refinement in steels. This is particularly empowered with ferrite refinement down to micron sizes in ferrite pearlite engineering steels. The latter is achieved through various well-defined methods in which strain induced transformation (SIT) has shown spectacular capabilities. In the present study,...
full textMODELLING OF KINETICS OF AUSTENITE-TO-ALLOTRIOMORPHIC FERRITE TRANSFORMATION IN 0.37C–1.45Mn–0.11V MICROALLOYED STEEL
The present paper is concerned to the theoretical and experimental study of the growth kinetics of allotriomorphic ferrite in medium carbon vanadium-titanium microalloyed steel. A theoretical model is presented in this work to calculate the evolution of austenite-to-allotriomorphic ferrite transformation with time at a very wide temperature range. At temperatures above eutectoid temperature, wh...
full textInfluence of Boron on Initial Austenite Grain Size and Hot Deformation Behavior of Boron Microalloyed Steels
The initial austenite grain size of boron microalloyed steel with three different amounts of boron (20, 40, and 60 ppm) was investigated under different heating temperatures (1150, 1100, and 1050 °C), and hot compression tests of samples in a wide range of temperature (900–1100 °C) and strain rate (0.1–10 s−1) were conducted. It was found that the initial austenite grain size increases with inc...
